Adrian Quaife-Hobbs warming his car up before the race

The 15 year-old reigning T Car champion qualified on the second row for the two races, but was punted out of the opening race, which was brought to a premature halt and declared after just four laps. He recovered to cross the line ninth but the second race fared better, the Sackville School pupil taking a superb second place to keep his hopes of retaining his title very much on track.

Starting race one from fourth place, Adrian made a good start to maintain position into the first corner, but before the completion of lap one, a coming together with Luciano Bachetta severely damaged his chances. The flooded track then took it’s toll on his car, the water seeping up under the car and flooding the engine. He was forced to pit to sort the problem, but the repairs were shortlived and soon recurred and he was forced into retirement. With the premature race stoppage though he was awarded ninth place after the race was declared at just four laps.

Race two had Adrian third on the grid and at the light he held station, slotting in behind Oliver Webb and pole-sitter Max Chilton. Two laps in and Webb spun off, the track conditions deteriorating by the second, allowing Adrian to move into second place. For three laps, the top three positions remained the same, until Borthwick in third found a way past Adrian demoting him to third but two laps later, Borthwick outbraked himself and spun, allowing Adrian to retake the place, which he held to the chequered flag.

“We didn’t get much practice on Saturday, after the steering column broke in one session and a stone went through the radiator in another,” said Adrian. “The third session was spent running in new tyres so we started today playing catch-up. It was a pretty disastrous weekend really, but at least we got a second and three points from race one.”

Adrian’s next race will be his debut appearance at Knockhill, nr Fife, which takes place next weekend, June 4/5. “I’m really looking forward to Knockhill,” said Adrian, “although it’s my first time at the track. After the problems we had today I’ll be hoping for better fortunes next weekend.”
